I also don't recommend aluminum as it may cause moisture and it can build rust especially when it is placed outdoors but there are companies that mix the aluminum with rattan or other softwood to control the exterior metal corrosion.

A lof of home owners out there will just settle for the biggest size possible because they anticipate that they will put stuff in there eventually and they want to play it safe. However, you also have to consider that giving stuff too big of a space will not hold it in place and might destroy the stuff you are trying to protect.
